Intel® DMI to SNMP Mapper Version 1.1 for Novell NetWare*
The Desktop Management Interface (DMI) is a standard management framework widely deployed to manage computer systems. The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) Management Framework (also known as the Internet-standard Network Management Framework) is widely used to manage network devices. The DMI and SNMP frameworks are similar in concept and function. However, the two are not inherently interoperable. Making the two protocols interoperable would greatly enhance enterprise management solutions, providing an integrated network and system management capability.The Desktop Management Task Force, Inc. (DMTF), recognizing the need for leveraging on both the ubiquity of SNMP-based server applications and the predominance of DMI-instrumented systems, adopted a DMI to SNMP mapping standard (DMTF DMI to SNMP Mapping Standard Version 1.0). The Intel DMI to SNMP Mapper, which implements the Standard, addresses the need to enable SNMP applications to also manage DMI-instrumented systems.
The DMI to SNMP Mapper facilitates writing a standard SNMP-based management application that can manage the functionality defined by a set of standard DMTF MIF groups, independent both of the component that implements those groups and of the system on which that component is installed. The Mapper also provides SNMP access to any component MIF installed on a DMI-instrumented system.
Intel offers two DMI to SNMP Mappers:
- The Intel DMI to SNMP Mapper Version 1.1 for Microsoft Win32*, which combines MIB Generator, run-time agent, User Guide and standard MIBs (more information and downloadable software are available).
- The Intel DMI to SNMP Mapper Version 1.1 for Novell NetWare contains only the DMI to SNMP run-time Agent for Novell NetWare (DMI2SNMP.NLM). It resides on Novell NetWare DMI-enabled systems and allows the systems to be managed by SNMP-based applications, by translating incoming SNMP commands into DMI calls and packaging the Service Provider results into SNMP format. It also translates DMI indications into SNMP traps.
Mixed-environment users (Novell NetWare and Microsoft Win32) must install both the Win32 Mapper and the NetWare Mapper. If the environment is Novell NetWare-only, the Win32 Mapper is not needed.
